Claudia Mills, Weaver

by Ryan Salinetti in Artists, Home, Interior Design, Textile

Claudia Mills, Weaver -- Center, Left hand Column

“Our rugs often trigger memories of well-loved rag rugs handed down through the generations.”

Working from a small production workshop in Philadelphia, PA, Claudia Mills Studio designs and creates one of a kind hand-woven rugs.  For over a decade her studio has offered a retail line of individually designed rugs and custom created site-specific rugs that are unique in today's textile market of global mass manufacturing.  All the designs are Claudia’s original creations.

"My first priority is to create a well designed piece, a functioning floor covering - a product showcasing both beauty and durability." Mills says.  “I have been weaving rugs for close to two decades, adapting the traditional rag rug craft to my own contemporary aesthetic.  As a designer I try to strike a balance between color, texture and pattern in each rug; interlacing colored yarns and strips of fabric to create infinitely variable possibilities for color and textural effects.  Inspiration comes in many forms but foremost is the fabric itself.”

While Claudia’s rugs have a contemporary, vibrant feel they retain the texture and warmth of traditional rag rugs. The designs strike a unique balance between the tradition of rag rug weaving and the needs of the current home design market.
