"Based in formalism and abstraction, I make collages and assemblages that evoke feelings of escape and a sense of wanderlust. Fragments of recognizable places are reconfigured into vast landscapes, and simultaneously flattened through the use of different scales and perspectives. I am interested in a push- pull sense of exploration and the space in between things. Found photographs and travel magazines are sources for familiar spaces, made unfamiliar by cutting and pasting, and through films and overlays that distort and obscure the image. I intend my work to be miniature, impossible places that simultaneously draw the viewer in to experience, and are a record of travel."—Melinda Laszczynski
